iStock_000021870837MediumThe Eighth Edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans has some great new changes based on the most current scientific evidence. For the first time, the guidelines set a specific recommendation to consume less than 10 percent of your calories from added sugars. They reaffirm that healthy eating includes choosing a variety of vegetables like the colorful ones we promote in our Champions for Change and Brighten the Family Table public education campaigns. The new guidelines also and reaffirm that eating fruit, especially whole fruits, is good for us.

Another thing I like about this new set of guidelines is that they describe how we all have a part to play in promoting healthy eating at home, in schools, at workplaces, in communities, and in food retail outlets like farmers’ markets grocery stores, and restaurants. Throughout our department, we will use these guidelines as we promote healthy eating and active living for all Arizonans.

Remember, everything you eat and drink matters. Choosing healthy foods at a calorie level that is right for you reduces your risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other chronic diseases. Following these new dietary guidelines can make for a healthier you and for a healthier Arizona. Find ways to make your plate a winning one at ChooseMyPlate.gov.
