New Debilitating Medical Condition Applications

By | January 17th, 2012|Licensing, Preparedness|

The Arizona Medical Marijuana Act (36-2801.01) directs us to accept and review applications to add new debilitating medical conditions that qualify folks to hold patient registration cards.  We outlined the requirements and review procedures in the Rules we adopted (R9-17-106)- which say that we’ll accept applications every January and July.  We’re planning to accept applications during the last [...]

Dogs and Residents

By | January 10th, 2012|Licensing|

The father of a person living in one of our licensed behavioral health residential facilities phoned in an after-hours complaint to our behavioral health licensing team on the Friday before Christmas Eve. Little did our team leader Bill McCarroll know when he answered the phone that he would hear graphic details of a brutal pit-bull attack- and he [...]

Web-Based EMT Certification Coming Soon

By | December 21st, 2011|General, Licensing|

As our IT team was developing the electronic medical marijuana application tool they started seeing that the code they were writing had potential uses in other parts of the agency.  In other words- that the basics of the Code could be used to electronify some of our other business lines.  We looked for areas that consumed [...]

Those of you that were working at our downtown campus last Wednesday afternoon may have seen the 100 or so folks carrying placards in front of our 150 Building.  They were asking us to make it easier to have a home-birth in AZ.  How can we do that, you ask?  Many of you probably didn’t [...]

Turning a Bad Survey into a Learning Opportunity

By | October 20th, 2011|Licensing|

Turning the Key on New Child Care Home Rules

By | October 5th, 2011|Licensing|

We turned the key last week on our new rules for child care homes (child care homes provide “pay” child care between 5 and 10 kids).  The new rules officially went into effect on September 30.  We crafted the new rules to go hand in hand with SB 1315, which outlines the standards for child [...]

Many folks don’t know that our Licensing division undergoes a periodic audit (survey) to look at compliance to our Federal contract with the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS). This past week, 3 surveyors from the regional office of CMS came to review our Long Term Care and Medical Facilities areas. This survey centered on [...]

The ABC’s of Medicare

By | August 29th, 2011|Behavioral Health, Licensing|

By now you know all about our goal of improving integration of care for individuals with a serious mental illness.  In looking more closely at this population, we noticed that about 50% of folks with a serious mental illness who are enrolled with Medicaid (AHCCCS) are also enrolled in Medicare… meaning that they’re “dual eligible.” [...]
